This is with reference to the report “Ferguson officer who shot Michael Brown resigns” (Dec. 1). His action shows that he feels guilty for taking an innocent life. Darren Wislon’s resignation is perhaps the only way to quell the ongoing unrest that started in the wake of the Ferguson verdict.

US President Barack Obama has also appealed for calm and requested the protesters to restrict their protests to only candle vigil. We remember what he said when the teenager, Trayvon Martin was shot and killed by Zimmerman in Florida sometimes back, “If I had a son he would look like Trayvon Martin.” The “Stand Your Ground” law of the state then saved the murderer from being prosecuted. This law gives immunity to homeowners. The supposed threats Martin carried then were the color of his skin and the hooded sweatshirt. However, it is very clear that if you are not black you needn’t fear being shot in public. The recent incident, which followed Michael, is the killing of a twelve-year- old Afro-American boy, Tamir Rice, by a police constable in Ohio. His crime was that he was carrying a toy gun. However, at a press conference, which followed the shooting he was referred to as “a young man.” He will be soon forgotten with countless other names of slain black people, majority of whom are in their teens. Unfortunately, it looks as if more blacks have succumbed to police shootings during the presidency of Barack Obama than before, causing embarrassment to the current regime. We have no doubt that the US president must be feeling bad about the current situation.
