I read with great interest Abdulateef Al-Mulhim’s article” What we can learn from Finland?” (June 9). Undoubtedly, education is the key to progress. No nation in the history of mankind has ever progressed without attaching importance to education.

It is imperative to design the educational system based on the needs of the global trends. The problem with the education system in most of the Muslim world is that it has become outdated. We are still relying on centuries-old methods to impart education. Those techniques may have worked in the past but it is not possible today. Sometimes I feel that technological advancements have made it easier to educate people.

Fortunately, unlike many other Muslim countries Saudi Arabia has the means to overhaul the education system. The Saudi government indeed is taking all possible measures to raise the quality of education. However, the writer’s idea is commendable because the Kingdom can use the blueprints devised by countries with good education systems and tailor it to suit its needs.
