I read with interest the article “Containing the IS” (Feb. 22) by Rasheed Abou-Alsamh. I agree with the views expressed by the writer that fighting the so-called Islamic State (IS) needs concerted efforts in various directions. Military response may not prove to be very effective in the long run and possibility of resurgence of a similar organization can never be ruled out. In order to effectively counter such organizations, we need to launch an intellectual battle starting from home.

The problem in the Muslim world is that we don’t give priority to the better understanding of Islam thus making it easier for unscrupulous elements to brainwash our youngsters. Pulpits could be effectively used to counter this ideology. One of the basic functions of the pulpit is to disseminate information regarding various issues. It is heartening to note that this important position is being properly used in the Kingdom but unfortunately this is not the case in other Muslim countries. We need to make all-out efforts to discredit the ideology promoted in the name of Islam. The barbarity of the Islamic State members is proof enough that they have either nothing to do with Islam or they have failed in properly understanding the true spirit of Islam.
