I read with great interest the article “Blessing in disguise” (Dec. 29) by Abdulrahman Al-Rashed. The points raised by the writer are valid. It is true that the decline in oil prices should be seen as an opportunity to take effective measures to diversify the economy. Leaders of oil-producing countries have already realized the hazards of total dependence on oil income and they are taking steps to address the issue but this realization has yet to trickle down to the masses.

Saudis are fortunate to have caring leaders who are working relentlessly for the welfare of their people. They should respond to the official efforts in a positive manner by taking their education and jobs seriously. They should enhance their skills and work hard to prove their mettle in every sphere of life. Complaining about expatriates usurping their jobs is not an excuse. They should think about competing with people from other countries. Healthy competition is very important for personal growth. In the absence of competition, one does not have to work hard to hone his/her skills.
