I fully agree with the views expressed by Saud Katib in his article “US’ moral authority over HR in question” (March 9). The writer has raised an important issue. I strongly believe that the world is facing major problems due to this American hypocrisy. The sole superpower does not practice what it preaches to others.

Contrary to popular belief, the US is not a heaven as far as human rights are concerned. Don’t get too impressed by the Hollywood flicks. Believe it or not, Hollywood is a much independent part of the government’s propaganda wing. People with a little knowhow of international politics must be aware of the term “soft power.”

Hollywood helps the US portray itself in a positive light around the world. The situation in the US may not be as bad as it is in many other countries but it is far from the images we see in Hollywood movies.

The problem with the US is that it wants to impose its values on other nations, which is the main source of problem.

Washington should realize that every country has different ground realities with a distinct culture and traditional values. The policy of “one-size fits all” cannot be applied here. People in the East follow ethics as defined and described in the religious texts. Whereas, in the West people follow manmade moral code of conduct. There are many other examples one could cite. In short, the US should try to live in peace and harmony with other countries and should refrain from imposing its values and culture on others.
