This refers to the report "ID proof to curb credit card fraud" (Feb. 9), which mentions about the credit card fraud that has become commonplace in the Kingdom to the point that a number of major retailers have begun demanding credit card users’ ID.
I think, one of the safest ways to protect the credit card holders from misuse or fraud is having a pass code, which the owners should assign. Many of the banks in the Kingdom have already adopted this method and I do not understand why other banks have not yet adopted it.
Not only for making transactions at the retail outlets by physically presenting the cards, the pass code is also required for making any online transaction. If the credit card is stolen or someone gets hold of the card, this added security renders the credit card almost useless. Besides, the measure of asking ID proof is not a fool proof method as it will be difficult for the retailers to prove to the credit card companies that their cashiers had indeed done the required verification.
With fast-paced changes in the technology, we could see use of fingerprints for verification purposes. — Safi H. Jannaty, Dammam
