This is with reference to the report “Grand Mufti: Selling expired food grave sin” (June 9). This practice is indeed un-Islamic as it affects the health of consumers. Islam, as a matter of fact, prohibits adulteration of food. It is sad to see Muslims indulging in practices that are against the teachings of Islam. Many Muslims don’t offer their daily prayers and due to this they don’t fully understand the true message of Islam. Offering prayers in congregation instills a feeling of brotherhood among the Muslims and help forge unity among them.

Similarly, the institution of Zakat is the best tool provided by Islam to fight poverty. It is a solution to many social ills. If all of us start paying Zakat in a responsible manner, we can help our poor brothers and sisters improve their standard of living.

Sometimes I feel that we as a nation have stopped following the teachings of Islam due to which we are lagging behind in every sphere of life and facing numerous social problems. If we start following the pristine teachings of Islam, most of our economic and social problems will be solved soon. It is not as difficult as some people might think. Islam is a very simple religion and easy to follow ideology that covers every aspect of an individual’s life.
