This is in reference to the building collapse in Bangladesh (April 25), which reflects the negligence of international companies.

These multinational firms come to poor countries like Bangladesh in search of cheap labor, and ultimately exploit the poor workers with the help of the local corrupt system.

This latest incident of building collapse in Bangladesh has prompted calls for greater social responsibility by such companies.

One way to check the corrupt practices by the owners of these businesses will be that the government either stop dealing with those who violate the rules of the country; or still better, let the government itself get involved in the production through joint ventures or by means of frequent inspection of to ensure safety and rights of workers. A tall order though — something like fantasizing.

Malpractices are not limited to Bangladesh; it is an international problem.

Poor workers are expolited by multinational companies in many places of the world. But, if the government wants better practices can be enforced.

If Western companies fulfill their social responsibilites in all sincerity and not plummet to the abyss of corruption merely for profits, then the poor and faceless workers will do better in safer working conditions. — Muhammad Saifuddin, By e-mail
