This is with reference to the report “Mass transit project to reduce traffic bottlenecks” (Feb. 15). It is heartening to note that the authorities are working overtime to introduce mass transit systems across the Kingdom. These projects will provide a huge relieve to all.

A modern mass transit system not only provides safe and fast transportation option to the masses but it also helps control environment pollution. In addition to developing mass transit programs, the authorities should take steps to promote the use of public transport.

There is a great need to create awareness among the masses about the merits of using public transport. In this part of the world, we have wrongfully linked use of public transport to one’s socioeconomic status. This is a very wrong mentality. We need to educate people about this issue and make all-out efforts to change people’s perception.

In advanced countries like the United Kingdom, even top officials, executives and businessmen prefer using public transport, as it saves time, money and help reduce traffic and parking issues. This is just one example. We usually learn negative things from the West very fast by watching movies etc. like the punk-style dressing and tattooing but when it comes to positive things we suddenly initiate the East-West debate.
