This is with reference to the article “Shifting sands of Lankan politics” (Jan. 28) by S.N.M. Abdi. The article focused mainly on the dynamics of international and regional politics and their impact on the island nation. I would like to add a few things regarding the electoral defeat of former President Mahinda Rajapaksa.

Rajapaksa’s defeat was prompted by a number of reasons at the domestic level. He had reportedly lost control of his so-called supported, who had started using their political connections for their personal gains thus giving rise to corruption in the country.

Rajapaksa also heavily relied on wrong advisers with no vision for the country. Their myopic views led Rajapaksa to turn a blind eye to some violent extremist groups, which created unrest among the minorities in Sri Lanka. The minority communities played a crucial role in his democratic ouster.

As for his tilt toward China, I think that countries like Sri Lanka should try to make good use of all the expertise of all its neighbors and should try to maintain cordial ties with all the neighboring countries.

The article, somehow, created an impression as if Rajapaksa’s foreign policy choices led to his defeat in the elections. I beg to disagree with the writer. His defeat was a result of his wrong moves on the domestic front.
