This is with reference to the report “Fathers seek protection from abusive children” (April 27). I read the report in utter disbelief and shock.

This is not such a good sign for a Muslim society. We believe in a religion, which teaches its believers not to utter a single word against their parents. And today we are reading reports about parents complaining about abuse at the hands of their children. We have stooped so low. It is unbelievable!

People treating their parents badly in their old age must keep one thing in mind i.e. what goes around, comes around. These people will also get old and they must wait for the day when their children will treat them in the same manner, as kids always learn from their elders. They must wait for the time when they will be forced to seek government support against their children.

Such people should try to read the Holy Qur’an and books on Holy Prophet (peace be upon him). They should not just read those books but try to absorb what is written in them.

They may get away in this world but in the Hereafter they have to pay for their arrogance toward their elderly parents. I think our religious scholars should highlight this issue in their Friday sermons. It is an effective way to teach people and educate them on various issues. I sincerely hope that all Muslim societies remain safe from the culture of “old houses.”
