I read with great interest the article “Time to sheath the sword of veto” by Gareth Evans (Feb. 7). I fully agree with the views of the writing regarding an effective mechanism to control the abuse of veto by members of the Security Council. As a matter of fact, the United Nations has become a tool in the hands of a few powerful nations to promote their hegemonic designs. They appear indifferent to the sufferings of other nations.

We, however, cannot entirely blame these global powers for their arrogance. The question is: Why do other nations accept their lopsided policies?

They all have the option and the right to walk out of the United Nations and form their own alliance sans the members of the Security Council. Let these powers fend for themselves. Such an action needs an iron will on part of the world leaders. What is the use of this toothless organization? It is a grim reminder of its predecessor, the League of Nations perhaps even worse. The United Nations should have ceased to function when the United States invaded Iraq completely ignoring the UN. That was a great snub that left UN with no moral ground to continue. It appears that it has the power of pressuring only the weaker nations. The powers that be can do anything and get away with it.
