This is in response to the front-page story, UK backs ‘safe passage’ for Assad.” I was just bewildered and shocked. It was indeed ridiculous and preposterous on part of the British prime minister to make such an absurd suggestion even for the sake of ending the bloodshed. What type of international judicial system was he propagating? Will the international community allow the principle of fairness and justice be hijacked by one single person? Will it not be akin to accepting the demands of some terror groups who have hijacked a plane carrying passengers?
Cameron sounded very weak when he stated that he would favor Assad facing the full force of international law and justice. As a leader of the United Kingdom, he should have been more firm in condemning the brutal acts and killings by the government machinery in Syria and instead of just favoring, he should have demanded an immediate action by the international community to end the bloodshed and putting Assad and his accomplices on trial.
Unfortunately, the members of the UN Security Council have been divided on this issue to serve their petty interests and allowed the situation to aggravate day after day and probably the suggestion of Cameron reflects that division. — Safi H. Jannaty, Dammam
