Thirty-four students, including 23 girls who passed out from the Bangladesh International School English Section Riyadh, were feted at the annual graduation ceremony at the Riyadh Palace Hotel on Wednesday.
Parents, teachers, well-wishers of the school were present to wish the students a bright future after completing school.
The school follows the British curriculum leading to IGCSE Cambridge and Edexcel (London) GCE AL Examination. Last year there was 100 percent success in all subjects taken by the students. Out of the 41 IGCSE students, more than 50 percent of them secured A star and A passes.
Sixteen-year-old Bangladeshi Faisal Masum, senior student at the school, was specially honored with a gold medal for topping in mathematics at the IGCSE Cambridge 2011 examination.
Masum had also obtained the highest marks in English language in Saudi Arabia and had topped in accounting and chemistry in the Riyadh province.
Another student Ishra Abdel Fateh received a laptop from a school sub-committee as a gift in recognition of her overall performance in all her examinations throughout her student career in the school.
In his welcome speech, Principal Mohamed Hussein said the institution has made a mark in the history of foreign education in the capital by virtue of its outstanding performance at public examinations.
He said the school's Edexcel (London) results were excellent, with more than 90 percent passes in all subjects. “With 38 students appearing for the examination, more than 50 percent of the students got A stars, As and Bs only.”
He said, last year several pupils of the schools entered the AlFaisal University in Riyadh solely on merit, getting scholarships too. Many other students got admitted to universities in Malaysia, Australia, Canada, United Kingdom and Bangladesh.
Bangladesh Ambassador Mohamed Shahidul Islam, the chief guest, told the outgoing students to play the role of ambassadors of the school.
The envoy also said the students should learn to be more competitive to become successful in the new world order.
The keynote speaker Dr. Mahfuza Begum, consultant at King Abdul Azeez Medical City, congratulated the new graduates and told them to become useful members of the society. The chairman of the board of management of the school, Mohammed Qamarul Islam presented a souvenir to the ambassador for his contribution as patron of the institution.
Valedictorian speeches were delivered by students Tasnum Tarannum, Samia Mahmud, Syed Ahemdunissa Mina and Marzouk Alam.
