Defense Minister Prince Salman has approved the bylaw of Prince Salman Award for students of higher education in historical and civilization studies of the Arabian Peninsula.
Riyadh’s King Saud University President Abdullah Al-Othman disclosed that the approval came after setting up of the annual research award following a directive from Prince Salman earlier in February.
“The prince had directed to institute the SR 1 million award when he delivered a lecture on King Abdul Aziz and his care and concern for the youths on the university campus. The award was set up by the Prince Salman Chair for Historical and Civilization Studies of the Arabian Peninsula at the university,” he said in a press statement.
Al-Othman said the university is proud to host this prestigious annual prize to be awarded to outstanding Saudi students, who are attending higher studies in the Arabian Peninsula’s history and culture at various universities within the Kingdom and abroad. He described the prize as one of the special gifts from Prince Salman for promoting knowledge, and giving incentives to students and researchers.
“Prince Salman is one of the prominent figures who is supporting the university in its march forward, and standing by the university sincerely and honestly with his benevolent acts, especially its charitable works. The prince is one of the great supporters of the university’s program of academic chairs,” he said.
Abdullah Al-Subaie, supervisor of the chair, said that Prince Salman’s directive to set up the award, the first of its kind not only in the Kingdom but also in the world, shows his ardent love for the history of the Kingdom and its achievements as well as his keenness in supporting Saudi young researchers who are focusing on historical and civilization studies of the Arabian Peninsula. “This award, no doubt, would help encourage Saudi students who do research in the fields of history and culture anywhere in the world. It would bring out new fruits in the research studies on the history and culture of the Arabian Peninsula,” he said.
Al-Subaie said that a higher commission as well as a scientific committee and a general secretariat for the award have been constituted. According to the bylaw, the annual award will be given to the best 10 scientific theses and three research papers in historical and civilization studies of the Arabian Peninsula.
The chair was established with an agreement between the university and the King Abdul Aziz Foundation for Research and Archives (Darah) under the aegis of Prince Salman in December 2009. Sheikh Sultan bin Muhammad Al-Qassmi, a member of the UAE Higher Council and ruler of Sharjah, was one among 18 winners of this year’s Prince Salman Prize for Research and Studies on the Arabian Peninsula.
