JEDDAH: The daily consumption of bread in Jeddah and Makkah, along with its production in bakeries, has exceeded five million loaves.
This is estimated to amount to more than 150 million loaves of bread during the month of Ramadan, said Fayez Hamada, chairman of the Bakeries Committee in Jeddah.
Hamada said a number of committees in the bakery sector were holding training courses in order to maintain a regular supply of bread and to prevent wasting large quantities of flour.
He said a number of bakeries in the two cities were producing bread using advanced techniques in accordance with the hygienic and health specifications of the Saudi Food and Drugs Authority (SFDA).
“Because of the difficulties in hiring Saudis as bakers, the industry largely depends on expat workers,” he said.
