JEDDAH: A local charity here has collected over 200,000 used books that it is putting up for sale to aid 3,900 orphans in Taif.
Representatives of the Mawakeb Al-Ajer organization is behind the initiative. The organization also collects unused or old furniture and clothing for sale to raise funds for charity, an online publication reported recently.
The books are on display in Al-Khalidiya, in northern Jeddah, and includes all types of fiction and non-fiction, covering history and academic studies. There are many novels and magazines in the collection, according to the report.
The organization has received many books donated by the families of people who have passed away, and those who simply want to find a good home for their private collection.
Abeer Alnowaiser, director of the charity said that 80 percent of these books do not cost more than SR10, with the proceeds going to the Taif Association of Orphans. He said there are books for young and old. People can buy books from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m.
He said the organization organizes such sales every year, close to schools and universities. It not only helps to inform and educate, but also promotes a culture of reading in the country, he said.
