RIYADH: Al-Batha Customs have foiled an attempt to smuggle a large quantity of gold weighing 263.72 kg, in addition to 247 grams of diamonds.
The jewelry was stashed in a car’s back seat, which was covered with blinds; the smuggler used his family to hide the metal and avoid paying customs fees.
Abdul Rahman Al-Mahna, director general of Al-Batha Customs, said the vehicle arrived at dawn and the customs agents found the jewelry concealed in plastic bags.
Diamond sets weighing 19 kg and 175 watches were concealed in plastic bags and boxes and covered with textile material. The driver put one of his sleeping children on top of the goods to deceive customs officers.
Separately, an attempt to smuggle 50,000 Captagon tablets from Jordan was foiled. Anti-narcotic sleuths in Jordan found the Saudi-bound pills.
Meanwhile, the Border Guard thwarted an attempt to smuggle 650,000 amphetamine tablets in Tabuk.
A spokesman said the Border Guard in Tabuk also confiscated 71,140 kg of hashish.
The guards suspected a vessel that entered Saudi waters heading toward the Haql coast. When a marine patrol tried to intercept the vessel, it changed direction and tried to go back the way it came. As the chase began, the smugglers threw a bag overboard, which was recovered and found to contain a large quantity of narcotics. He said the contents have been sent for investigation.
In a related case, the Border Guard in Najran foiled an attempt to smuggle 466 kg of hashish, which was being carried in a car with two citizens at the Khabbash border.
Another car that was followed by the Border Guard yielded 71 kg of hashish. It was trying to cross the Saudi border from Qita’ Siqam. The car occupants were arrested.
