RIYADH: The Special Criminal Court here has sentenced three citizens to a total of 34 years in jail for their involvement in terrorist activity including the possession of weapons and ammunition.
The first defendant was convicted of shooting at members of the security forces when they tried to arrest him. He is also currently facing charges of shooting a person with a hunting rifle. The court found him guilty of possessing weapons that he planned to use to undermine the Kingdom’s security. In addition, he was convicted on charges of participating in illegal protests in Qatif.
The court sentenced him to jail for 20 years, which includes the three years he spent in detention during his trial. He was also fined SR10,000, had all his weapons confiscated, and would not be allowed to travel once he serves his jail term, a report in a local publication stated on Wednesday.
The second defendant was found guilty of not informing the security authorities about the first defendant, for shooting someone in a separate incident, and possession of weapons to disrupt the country’s internal security. He was sentenced to eight years, which included two years spent in jail during his trial, a fine of SR5,000, and a travel ban once he completes his sentence.
In a preliminary judgment, the third defendant was found guilty of traveling over Turkey’s border to join Daesh in Syria, where he received training in handling weapons, and for destroying his national identity card and passport. He was also convicted for helping a friend join Daesh in Turkey. The court stated that a mitigating factor was that he returned home voluntarily but sentenced him to six years, with a fine of SR3,000, and a six-year travel ban after completing his sentence.
