A 13-year-old sixth grader at Anas bin Al-Nadar Elementary School in Jeddah died after suffering a heart attack while using the school’s lavatory.

Lt. Nawaf Al-Bouq, spokesman for the Jeddah police, told Arab News that his department received a report from the school administration at noon saying they had found a dead student in the school’s restroom.

“A committee, consisting of staff from the forensic and criminal evidence department, police patrols and the Civil Defense, was immediately formed to proceed to the scene. The coroner dismissed the possibility of criminal activity following close examination of the body,” he said.

The case was referred to the psychology department at the Saudi Commission for Investigation and Prosecution for further routine procedures to define the cause of death.

Abdullah Al-Thaqfi, general director of Education in Jeddah, denied reports in the local media and social networks that a witness had blamed the student's death on the building's dilapidated conditions.

Abdul Majeed Al-Ghamdi, spokesman of the General Directorate of Education in Jeddah, said the cause of death was due to natural causes according to medical reports.

“School staff knocked on the door several times when the teacher noticed he'd been in for a long time. They eventually broke the door down and called the Red Crescent and the other medical bodies,” said Al-Ghamdi.

Medical experts who examined the body said his death was due to natural causes, he said.

Representatives from educational bodies in the region were present at the hospital to extend support and condolences to the boy's family.
