RIYADH: After continued refusal by the members of the Shoura Council to change the General Presidency of Youth Welfare to the General Authority for Sports, a royal decree issued Saturday has aimed to do just that, with the title change going ahead after all.
The Saudi sports sector breathed a sigh of relief thanks to its ability to now keep up with various developments witnessed by the country on the back of the new decree. Since the birth of the General Presidency of Youth Welfare, the body has developed into more than 25 federations and a sports committee, in addition to 170 sports clubs, 20 sports cities and 25 offices. The organization now implements annual programs with a budget of SR1.3 billion each year.
The presidency now demands the increase of its budget to meet all of its requirements and to simulate a global sports revolution, especially in neighboring countries, such as Qatar and United Arab Emirates.
Prince Abdullah bin Musaed, chairman of the board of directors of the General Authority for Sports, wrote on his Twitter account that the new authority is a fresh phase that speaks of a better future for sports with a strong sports apparatus, a community that practices sport and a sense of competition that is supported by modern facilities and a focused work ethic, reported Al-Hayat.
