RIYADH: Republic of Chad’s Ambassador Sagour Youssof Itno, who is also dean of the African Group in the Kingdom, on Tuesday outlined the Agenda 2063 of the African Union (AU).
A press conference was held ahead of the African Day celebration on Wednesday at the Ethiopian Embassy, to be hosted by Ambassador Amin Abdulkadir.
Agenda 2063 is a strategic framework for the socio-economic transformation of the African continent over the next 50 years, the Ethiopian envoy said.
“It builds on, and seeks to accelerate the implementation of past and existing continental initiatives for growth and sustainable development,” he said.
Speaking on the occasion, Ambassador Itno said, “The guiding vision of Agenda 2063 is the AU vision of an integrated, prosperous and peaceful Africa, driven by its own citizens and representing a dynamic force in international arena.” He said that the main task now is to ensure the execution of the first Ten-Year Plan which incorporates the goals, priority areas, targets, indicative implementation strategies as well as flagship projects.
The ambassador noted that the following form the Agenda 2063 foundations: The Constitutive Act of the African Union; the African Union Vision; the eight priority areas of AU 50th Anniversary Solemn Declaration; African Aspirations for 2063; regional and continental frameworks; and member states’ national plans.
He also said the African aspirations for 2063 include: A prosperous Africa based on inclusive growth and sustainable development; an integrated continent, politically united, based on the ideals of Pan-Africanism and the vision of Africa’s renaissance; an Africa of good governance, democracy, respect for human rights, justice and the rule of law; a peaceful and secure Africa; an Africa with a strong cultural identity, common heritage, values and ethics; an Africa whose development is people driven, relying on the potential offered by people, especially women and youth, and caring for children; and an Africa as a strong, united and influential global player and partner.
The press conference was attended by AU ambassadors including Dya-Eddine Said Bamakhrama, dean of all diplomatic corps and Djibouti ambassador, and Mozambique Ambassador Cesar Francisci de Gouveia Jr., chair of the African Day organizing committee.
