An Al-Qaeda terror suspect on trial died after a heart attack in a Jeddah prison on Tuesday, an Interior Ministry statement said Thursday.
“A medical team administered first-aid to the prisoner, Yusuf Ali Al-Hamdan, at Dhahban prison when he complained of illness. He was then taken to the Central Security Hospital on the prison's premises,” the statement said, adding that his son, another detainee at the same ward, also accompanied him to the hospital.
“After preliminary treatment, the man was referred to the King Fahd General Hospital in Jeddah for better treatment. At 11 a.m., the hospital issued a medical report announcing his death following severe cardiac crisis, which led to a sharp drop in blood pressure and breathing difficulties. He had a history of serious blood pressure and high cholesterol,” the statement said.
Al-Hamdan and his son were taken into custody in 2004 for suspected terror connections. They traveled to Afghanistan more than once, the last trip of which took place in the aftermath of the Sept. 11 attacks.
