JEDDAH: The Jeddah chapter of Aligarh Muslim University Alumni (AMUA) has elected new office bearers and committee members for 2016 to 2018, after the term of the previous Farzan Rizvi-led committee expired.
Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) is one of the leading educational institutions in India. Many alumni are living and working in the Kingdom.
A committee of 14 members was formed to represent the AMU alumni in Jeddah. Outgoing President Farzan Rizvi will form part of the committee as an adviser. The new office-bearers are Azizurrab A. Mohammad as president, Nooruddin Khan vice president, Asim Zeeshan general secretary, Ather Rasool treasurer, and Anwar Bilgrami joint secretary.
The committee members are Imtiaz Hussain Ahmed, Abdul Baseer, Aqeel Jamil, Mohammad Sirajuddin, Mohammad Ateeq Siddiqui, Rabnawaz Khan, Prince Mufti Ziaul Hasan, Shams Tabrez Alam and Gufran Nishtar.
A three-member election commission supervised the event comprising Siraj Siddiqui, Pervez Khan and Syed Mohammed Ahmed Hashmi. They praised Farzan Rizvi for his contribution as the previous president.
The highlight of the event was the unopposed election of all committee members. President Azizurrab thanked the community for its support. The new committee embarks on an ambitious plan to work for the welfare of the AMU alumni and the Indian community, he said.
The election of the new committee was not without its fair share of controversy with one senior AMU alumnus questioning the entire process.
“The hushed up way of revising and getting the constitution passed without any public debate on the addition of new clauses giving non-Aligs entry into the committee is questionable,” said Abdul Ghafoor Danish. “The very fact that no one has come forward to contest these elections is proof of the rejection of the electoral process.”
