RIYADH: The Customs Department here at King Khalid International Airport (KKIA) foiled an attempt to smuggle 47,206 Captagon pills hidden in three clothing consignments received by Customs via express mail.
Sultan Al-Fuhaid, director general of Customs at KKIA, said on Sunday that the hidden Captagon tablets were found in three consignments of women’s dresses during custom procedures. The pills were wrapped in material to cover the items in an attempt to outsmart Customs officers, but the attempt was foiled by the alert officials on duty.
Al-Fuhaid lauded the efforts of the Customs officials and praised the alertness at all levels — land, sea and air border crossings — saying that any attempts to smuggle prohibited items into the Kingdom will be thwarted in order to keep the country safe and secure.
Customs officials are exerting all-out efforts to prevent the smuggling of drugs into the Kingdom, he added.
Recently, smuggling attempts of all types of contraband have been thwarted by KKIA custom officials, Al-Wadeea Customs and Al-Batha Customs.
KKIA Customs officials early this month f oiled a smuggling attempt when two drug couriers were arrested separately after substantial amounts of heroin were found hidden inside their intestines, whereas several attempts to smuggle a large amount of cannabis (hashish) through land by drug peddlers were foiled last month at the Al-Wadeea inlet.
Moreover, an attempt to smuggle a large quantity of pork, which is banned not only in the Kingdom but other Islamic countries, was foiled recently by Al-Batha Customs.
Custom operations have been bolstered by the addition of the latest equipment such as hi-tech X-ray machines and other electronic gadgets to thwart any such attempts; now drug smugglers cannot outsmart Customs officials with the zero-tolerance policy against smuggling of any contraband. Earlier this month while commenting on the alertness to foil such attempts Al-Fuhaid said, “Customs departments at all entry points into the Kingdom have been reinforced with more staff and highly advanced technological devices to foil the attempts of smugglers.”
