A competition to showcase the best traditional dish was held in Madinah recently lined up with other activities in the Al-Hijaz historical railway. More than 15 women participated in the competition which formed a part of the forum for handicrafts.

The participants made over 50 famous dishes and sweets. Abdulaziz Al-Mahwous, the organizer of the event said that the competition was held to demonstrate Saudi women’s cooking skills and their expertise at preparing such delicious meals. The committee succeeded in showing their audience not only the cooking capabilities of Saudi women, but also teaching the young generation of women the art of cooking and their cultural norms and traditions.

The dishes included Hijazi cuisine such as rice meals, stuffed vegetables, salads, pickles, margoog and assida. Some deserts that were presented were Haresa, Basboosa, along with other traditional cakes and pastries.

A panel of judges tasted and evaluated each dish. Eight first place winners received cash prizes while the other participants won complimentary prizes and appreciations.
