RIYADH: The body of a Nepalese worker, lying in the morgue of a Saudi hospital for the last three years, will soon be sent back to Nepal, said Ananda Prasad Sharma, chargé d’affaires at the Nepal Embassy.
“The Nepalese Embassy is exerting all efforts to repatriate the body of the worker named Baum Bahadur Tamang as early as possible,” he said. “All necessary procedures of sending the body of Tamang were completed.”
Sharma, while contradicting reports published in a section of Nepalese press, said that the Nepalese Embassy will soon settle this case.
A report published in The Himalayan Times, a Nepalese daily newspaper, erroneously stated that the body of the worker has been lying in the hospital for the last five years.
The report said that Tamang’s family could not get his body back because of their inability to pay his hospital bills and the costs of transportation back to Nepal.
Tamang arrived in Saudi Arabia for work but became ill three years after his arrival. He was admitted to a local hospital but died, the paper said in the report.
The son of Tamang was quoted by the paper as saying the family has not received the delayed salary of the worker, who was employed by a private company in the Kingdom.
There have recently been several deaths of Nepalese workers reported to the Nepal Embassy. A total of 277 Nepalese migrants died in Saudi Arabia in 2015, according to the embassy in Riyadh.
Of the deceased, the majority were found to have died of natural causes. In 2014, 229 Nepalese migrant workers died in Saudi Arabia.
