JEDDAH: The security agencies are pursuing an unidentified individual who detonated an explosive device in the outside parking lot of a road security forces station in the Al-Ahsa neighborhood of Al-Mahasen on Thursday.
The incident resulted in minor injuries to an officer and light property damage. The perpetrator fled the scene before the security authorities arrived on the scene, according to the police.
Eastern Province police spokesman, Col. Ziad Al-Ruqaiti, confirmed the incident took place at 11:30 p.m. There was also minor damage to five cars parked at the site. An investigation has been launched, with the Interior Ministry expected to release more details soon, he said.
Security sources revealed that the perpetrator threw the explosive device inside the parking lot area and fled before it detonated. There was no exchange of fire between the attacker and police officers as has been claimed on social networking sites.
Some people posted messages claiming that a man carrying a machine gun had stormed the police station and exchanged fire with the security authorities. A number of photographs and videos were also shared online claiming to be the location where the terrorist incident took place.
This is not the first time such an attack has taken place in Al-Mahasen neighborhood. On Jan. 29 this year, two men stormed the Al-Rida mosque during Friday prayers and detonated explosive belts, resulting in the death of five people and injury to 36 others, including three security officers.
