A court in Jeddah has sentenced a well-known Saudi businesswoman to one month in jail and 50 lashes for insulting inspectors from the Commission for the Promotion of Virtue and the Prevention of Vice (Haia), local media said.

The commission staff reportedly entered a café owned by the woman, where they found several violations.

Illegal expat workers tried to flee the scene when they arrived, said a local daily.

The owner approached Haia officials as they filed a report and verbally attacked them, describing them as “ignorant men” and “liars,” the paper said.

The trial lasted several months, during which the Court of Appeals rejected a provisional ruling of five days in jail and 10 lashes.
