Egypt has welcomed a call made by Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques King Abdullah to back Sunday’s GCC reconciliation agreement that saw Saudi Arabia, UAE and Bahrain mend ties with Qatar.

“Egypt announces its full trust in the wisdom and vision of King Abdullah,” said a statement from the presidency on Wednesday. It thanked the king for his “tireless efforts” to serve the interests of Arab and Islamic nations.

Earlier, the king urged Egypt to support Qatar’s return to the Arab fold. “I call on the people and leadership of Egypt to work with us to ensure the success of this (reconciliation), for Arab solidarity.” The king said the GCC supports Cairo.

The king said the agreement between Saudi Arabia, UAE, Bahrain, Kuwait and Qatar offers “a general framework for unity, consensus, and an end to differences” among Arab states.

King Abdullah also urged media organizations and writers in the GCC and Egypt to support the reconciliation efforts, which he said would help achieve security and stability in the region. “The present circumstances and challenges demand greater unity,” he said.

Saudi Ambassador to Doha Abdullah Al-Aifan said the GCC accord would boost economic relations between Saudi Arabia and Qatar and promote joint investment projects.

“We are happy with the reconciliation accord reached in Riyadh thanks to the wisdom of the GCC leaders,” he said, adding: “The Riyadh summit proves that GCC countries are capable of overcoming any crisis.”

The UAE also welcomed the king’s call to strengthen Arab unity.
