Civil Defense teams succeeded in containing the leakage of fuel from a large tanker that overturned at the capital’s southern ring road early on Sunday morning.

The accident happened at around 4 a.m. on a road bridge over the Al-Ferayyan street and the southern ring road intersection, which is busy with heavy traffic.

As soon as Civil Defense received information about the mishap, they sent six fire-fighting and technical assistance squads to the location.

Within a few hours, they succeeded in stopping the leakage, cleaning the area from hazardous material and returning the traffic to normal.

No casualties have been reported out of the accident whether on the driver side or the commuters.

But the accident caused a large traffic disruption, congestion, and jams at the southern ring road, in particular at the intersection, and the nearby areas for a few hours delaying commuters on their way to work and schools at the first day of the week.

An eye witness said this accident and the one that happened in late 2012 on Khurais road show the urgent need for a stricter monitoring of the drivers by the Traffic Department. The drivers also need a constant updating of their driving skills.

In the accident on Khurais road in late 2012, a similar large tanker carrying butane gas crashed into the beams of the bridge while trying to turn into a side road below a bridge, causing a huge explosion.

It resulted in damaging the bridge killing 22 persons and injuring 133 others from different nationalities, and devastated cars and properties at the location of the explosion and its surrounding areas.
