The Ministry of Commerce and Industry is set to launch an extensive campaign throughout the Kingdom to raise awareness amongst citizens about commercial fraud and other issues of interest to consumers, according to an informed source in the ministry.

The source indicated that citizens will receive 25 percent of the fine imposed on violators, if they inform the ministry of detected violations in commercial centers, restaurants, supermarkets and retail shops.

“The move is intended to encourage citizens to cooperate with the ministry and participate in monitoring prices. The ministry has also announced toll free lines to receive reports from citizens,” he explained.

He pointed out that if prices are raised on subsidized commodities, merchants would be subject to fines, however commodities that are not subsidized fluctuate in price depending on supply and demand. The ministry will intervene in instances where the rise in prices is exorbitant, he noted.

Regarding retailers’ return policy, the source said the policy is valid if the defect in the commodity is due to a manufacturing error.

He applauded the efforts exerted by the Ministry of Commerce and the cooperation of citizens in this regard.
