JEDDAH: A policeman was wounded when unidentified gunmen opened fire on a patrol in Jeddah on Sunday night. The wounded patrol commander was in stable condition, the Saudi Press Agency said, citing a police statement.

Investigations are underway to track down the assailants, it added.

The deadliest attack on security forces was on Aug. 6 when a suicide bomber detonated an explosives-packed vest in a Special Emergency Forces Mosque in Asir, killing 15 people. Grand Mufti Abdul Aziz Al-Asheikh condemned the bombing as an “ugly criminal act,” noting that it would only strengthen national unity against terrorism.
