Consumer Protection Association (CPA) plans to file a case against the Communications and Information Technology Commission (CITC) for revoking free roaming services, said Nasser Al-Toam, the CPA chief executive.

“This move comes in an effort to retaliate against the CITC’s decision to cancel free roaming services previously provided to citizens. Thus far, all other measures exerted to try to revoke the commission’s decision have been to no avail,” Al-Toam told a local newspaper.

The CITC even dismissed the Shoura Council’s recommendations urging the commission to abandon its decision.

Al-Toam emphasized that the association would take all the necessary measures to protect the interests and rights of consumers.

“We hoped that the CITC, in its capacity as a regulator, would favor consumers in their decisions,” he added.

He also indicated that the price of phone calls in the Kingdom are much higher than those in neighboring countries in the region, according to a study of market prices conducted by the CPA.

“In other Arab countries, telecommunication companies provide consumers with free calls, as well as attractive offers and packages; we are seriously lagging behind in these services,” the chief executive asserted. The decision, Al-Toam said, will benefit communication companies at the expense of the economy.
