A number of transportation companies are planning to install cameras in school buses to ensure safe driving. The move follows an increase in road crashes that have killed a number of teachers recently.

Cameras will not be mandatory, but companies who wish to ensure top services and protection for passengers, especially female teachers and students, can have access to this important device.

“Transportation companies can use cameras to monitor the driver’s movements which will ensure greater safety of passengers and encourage the drivers to pay more attention to their driving,” said Marwan Al-Rahimi, director of a transportation company in Jeddah, while speaking to Arab News.

He said cameras would be installed near drivers to monitor their movements on the job. “It will also evaluate drivers’ skills in dealing with congested roads and avoiding traffic accidents.”

Unqualified foreign drivers who are not adequately trained in operating heavy vehicles account for 60 percent of accidents involving Haj or Umrah visitors, according to a report.
