RIYADH: The police in Taif seized 184,000 Captagon tablets and 119,000 narcotic pills found in the possession of a young suspect who tried to escape on Wednesday morning in the tourist area of Shifa.
The security operation was conducted on the directive of Makkah Gov. Prince Khalid Al-Faisal, adviser to Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques King Salman.
The prohibited drugs were found hidden inside wrapped tea and coffee trays in the suspect’s car when police pulled him over. Police arrested the suspect and his car was impounded. The seized drugs were turned over to the Drug Enforcement Administration branch in Taif city for proper action.
Taif police chief Brig. Gen. Mohammed Al-Harthi said that police fanned out across the area for suspected drug pushers and smugglers on Monday and Tuesday.
He said the operation was expected to serve as a deterrent to drug smuggling in the area, adding that suspects come from various parts of the Kingdom.
Sources claimed that the area had served as a site for many offenders and violators of public morals, some of whom come from other parts of the Kingdom like Riyadh, Qassim, Jeddah, Makkah, and neighboring countries Kuwait and the UAE.
They claimed that police recorded at least 119 cases of irregularities during the last two days. These included illegal possession of weapons.
The sources added that “there’s need to strictly enforce discipline to ensure safety for tourists visiting the area, and maintain a wholesome environment for the youth so that they grow up to be good and responsible citizens in the future."
