Egyptian expatriates in the Kingdom, the largest expatriate block living abroad, are preparing again to cast their vote in the referendum on the amended constitution for four days from Jan. 8 in Jeddah and Riyadh.

Egyptian expatriates won the right to cast votes in elections at Egyptian embassies and consulates abroad following the Jan. 25 revolution. The 2012 constitution has been suspended since the ouster of Muhammad Mursi in July.

Amendments were made to the suspended constitution which were passed at a national referendum in December 2012 by a committee appointed by the interim authorities.

According to a roadmap announced by the interim government following Mursi’s ouster, a new constitution has to be okayed before fresh parliamentary and presidential elections. The voting will take place from 9 a.m. till 8 p.m. and Saudi diplomatic security forces will control the large number of expatriates who are expected to turn up, the Egyptian Embassy said in a statement on Monday.

The embassy urged its nationals visiting diplomatic missions to cast their votes to carry valid Saudi iqamas along with them to be presented to Saudi security guards.

With 159,222 registered voters, Riyadh is the world’s largest Egyptian overseas voting center followed by Jeddah with around 100,000 voters.

About 681,695 Egyptian expatriates have registered for voting in Egyptian embassies around the world. About 310,000 of them are registered in Saudi Arabia.
