JEDDAH: A court has sentenced a father to eight years in jail and 700 lashes for beating his seven-year-old daughter to death last year with a pipe because she said she did not love him.
Said Al-Qahtani, lawyer of the child, Yara, said the father, Mohammad Ali Al-Qahtani, can file an appeal within 30 days after receiving notice of the court’s verdict. The child’s mother can also file a demand for final judgment in the case, an online publication reported Wednesday.
The mother said when she divorced Yara’s father, she took care of her until she was seven years of age. “Her father refused to allow her to live with me. Then she moved to live with him at his home in Riyadh, but was unhappy, which had affected her health.”
She said that according to the statement given by Yara’s father, as recorded by the investigator, he had beaten her all over her body and head with a pipe for saying she did not love him.
After the beating, he locked her up in a room. She continued to cry between Asr and Maghrib, and when he went to check what was happening, he found her in a bad condition. He then drove toward a local hospital but she died on the way.
The mother said Yara’s father did not tell her that she had died, and that her body was kept in Riyadh’s mortuary from Sept. 23 to Oct. 5 last year. It was only when she went to Riyadh that she discovered her daughter had died.
