RIYADH: The Ministry of Commerce and Investment (MCI) announced here on Thursday that the consumer call center and the field inspection and search teams will redouble their efforts and continue working during Eid Al-Fitr holidays in all regions of the Kingdom.
An official from the ministry said that such inspections would serve the interests of the consumers and safeguard against exploitation of the holiday season, and help verify the authenticity of Eid promotional offers.
The MIC has been implementing an extensive inspection plan for all divisions and sections across the Kingdom to implement during Ramadan and Eid Al-Fitr holidays.
The primary goals of this plan are to ensure the availability of necessary food supplies, their replacements, and to check for food adulteration, and also to observe for business frauds and take legal action against anything that affects supply and demand in the retail market.
The ministry has also urged consumers to report to its department in the event of a commercial fraud, system violations or any dishonest promotional offers through its consumer call center using the number 1900, or through a “commercial violation report” application on smartphones.
The MCI staff will exert all their efforts to respond to complaints and to control violations to ensure the protection of consumer rights.
The inspections are to ensure the availability of basic commodities and monitor promotions during the month of Ramadan and Eid holidays. The ministry inspectors would check the validity of such items, and necessary action would be taken against anyone found in violation of the law.
The MCI confirmed that the inspection teams will check for price tags on items and verify that those prices match with the billing of the cash register at the check-out counter.
The inspectors will also monitor promotions offered by markets and shops, to ensure the absence of any fake offers or sales. The inspectors will take necessary legal action against any violations and will impose proper penalties on violators in accordance with the degree of the offense, the official said.
The MCI branches in Makkah and Madinah has been implementing its annual control and operational plan to cater to the needs of the millions of Umrah pilgrims who come from all parts of the world to the two holy cities during this season. This program will continue till the Eid holidays are over.
