One patient was killed and three were injured on Friday in a fire at King Abdulaziz Mental Health Hospital in Al-Umrah district in Makkah.

Six Civil Defense teams and personnel from the Health Affairs and Red Crescent Authority were deployed after receiving notice of the fire at dawn.

An emergency alert was declared at all hospitals across Makkah. The Civil Defense teams were able to control the fire and prevent it from spreading to other parts of the building.

The fire resulted in the death of one patient, aged 40, from Al-Jamoom province, who had been transferred to the hospital three days earlier from a police station in the province.

Other patients suffered from smoke inhalation and were rushed to Hira General Hospital. Some 50 people were evacuated.

Maj. Saleh Al-Oliani, spokesman for the Civil Defense, said the units were supervised by Brig. Gen. Thamer Al-Hakami, director of the administration.

The fire began in a small four by four meter isolation room on the second floor of the hospital building and mostly consumed furniture.

Hattan Mohammed Pojar, director of emergency management of health affairs in Makkah, said 32 patients were evacuated to King Abdulaziz Hospital in Al-Zahir district.
