One person was seriously injured and four people suffered mild burns during a firework display at Riyadh’s King Fahd International Stadium.

“Three rescue teams were dispatched to the scene, where a man and his four children sustained burns, some serious, to various parts of their bodies due to fireworks,” said Ahmad Al-Enezi, spokesman for the Red Crescent. The incident comes less than two days after a 14-year-old boy died when a firecracker burst in his hand in a Riyadh neighborhood. The injured were transferred to the National Guard and Abanami hospitals in King Abdulaziz City in Riyadh.

Firecrackers are still widely available on the streets of Jeddah, Makkah, Taif, Riyadh and other cities despite attempts by the Ministry of Commerce and Industry to end its use altogether. The government has even announced a financial reward of SR5,000 to anyone who reports fireworks warehouses.

Ironically, fireworks are often sold by women and children during the Eid holidays, both in Jeddah and in other parts of the Kingdom.

Jeddah police have arrested several expats in the downtown area, a hub of firework sales.

Police and municipal authorities have attempted to curb the sale of fireworks in several districts of Riyadh, but they continue to be a major source of firework supplies sold in the capital, according to sources. The ministry confirmed that it would monitor and limit activity and educate the community about the hazards of fireworks,.
