A total of 488 people committed suicide last year, more than three-quarters of whom are men and expats, according to the Ministry of Health. Coroner’s offices reportedly received around 3,000 bodies, mostly male, half of whom died due to unnatural causes, including suicide.

More than 40 percent of deaths, meanwhile, have yet to be classified as being due to accidental, natural or unnatural causes.

Sixty percent of these bodies belong to foreigners, mostly Indian and Pakistani nationals, the MOH said.

Suicide accounts for just under a third of all unnatural deaths, while suspected murder cases account for 25 percent of the more than 1,500 corpses.

Unidentified victims accounted for 10 percent of these corpses.

Autopsies, however, were only conducted on 40 percent of bodies Kingdom-wide. Jazan had a 100-percent autopsy rate, while Riyadh had an almost 84-percent rate of forensic examination.

Baha officials, by contrast, only conduct six autopsies for every 60 bodies.
