RIYADH: The Saudi Commission for Tourism and National Heritage (SCTNH) is gearing up with a number of activities and tourism programs across the Riyadh region ahead of the midterm school break, which begins this weekend.
In an effort to promote the rich culture and popular tourist attractions in the region, which will also promote domestic tourism, the Riyadh branch of the SCTNH urged citizens and expatriates alike to spend the school break with family inside the province and enjoy excursions in cities and municipalities in the Riyadh region.
An SCTNH official on Monday said that the Riyadh branch has begun implementing a number of fun activities and programs across the region through five tourist routes that reflect the diversity of the tourism potential in the province.
Riyadh Province has been demarcated into five tourism routes and all will be revived during the midterm break. The five routes are: Al Majm’a route, which starts in Riyadh city passing through Al-Majm’a, Al-Ghat and Al-Zolfi municipalities; the Riyadh-Kharj-Al Dalam route; the Riyadh-Awdat Sidir-Rawdat Sidir route; the Shagrah route, which starts in Riyadh passing through Al-Qassab village, Shagrah city and Shagrah Municipality; and finally the Riyadh internal route, which includes visiting tourism and heritage sites inside the city of Riyadh that includes the famous Al-Musmak Palace, the King Abdul Aziz Historical Center that houses the National Museum, the Saqr Al-Jazeera Aviation Museum, the historic Diriyah, and the beautiful valley of Wadi Hanifah on the outskirt of the capital.
The Turaif district in the historic Diriyah is a major tourist attraction and was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2010. Al-Musmak Fort and Museum are a focal point for visiting high-profile leaders, and recent visitors include French President Francois Hollande, Irish Prime Minister Enda Kenny, New Zealand Governor-General Jerry Mateparae, and Danish Crown Prince Frederik and Crown Princess Mary. Wadi Hanifa is the largest natural open resort in the Kingdom and a famous picnic attraction in the capital during holidays.
The SCTNH official related that the tourist routes include archaeological sites in the province, heritage villages, natural parks, historical palaces, museums and agro-tourism sites to introduce citizens and residents to the history, heritage and culture in order to promote heritage preservation.
He added that the tourist routes follow a pattern and start from a specific point in the province, like a city or village. They follow a road map that involves a high degree of processing and preparation of tourist attractions in order to enable them to be a part of the tourist experience, and they end within the province in another city or a village that includes a number of tourist attractions, resorts and services.
An official of the Riyadh Municipality said all concerned departments have been instructed to keep facilities in top condition, and even upgrade all the places students might frequent during their leisure time, including public parks, walkways and playgrounds.
