JEDDAH: Sukaina Al-Muhanna, the child whose hand had to be amputated three months ago, died after suffering a health setback.

The hand of the child was amputated because of a medical error following administration of an injection in her hand, according to the child’s parents.

The child, buried Sunday evening in Qatif, died in Qatif Central Hospital after she suffered a health setback caused by the amputation of her hand.

The health affairs department in the Eastern Province earlier opened an investigation on the case which they referred to the legal health committee in the region.

The family of the child accused the nursing staff of committing a medical error after they failed to insert the syringe feed into her hand, resulting in a blood clot which led to the need to amputate her hand in another hospital following a number of medical meetings and consultations.

Assad Saud, media spokesman for the EP health department, was quoted as saying to a local publication that the investigation procedures concerning the child’s case started immediately after receiving a formal complaint.

“The Ministry of Health will release a special statement on the causes of the death of the girl. The officials at the ministry here are still waiting for the results of the medical investigations,” said the spokesman.

Many other hospitals intervened to diagnose the medical and health situation of the child, including Dammam Central Hospital, King Fahd Specialist Hospital in Dammam and Ahsa and the girl was moved at the time to get treatment at Riyadh’s Specialist Hospital.
