JEDDAH: A spokesman for the Ministry of Labor and Social Development, Khalid Aba Al-Khail, said his ministry has identified the mother of the infant who appeared in a video clip on Twitter being abused and berated.
He said the mother was interviewed by the director of the ministry’s branch and steps will be taken to protect children against any kind of abuse.
Earlier, a Twitter user posted a video showing an infant being tortured and accused the father who lives in Makkah of abusing the infant.
The Twitter user said she is of Syrian nationality and the infant's father is a Saudi who recently took custody of the one-month-old child. The man has started threatening the mother and abusing the child while filming his actions.
The hashtag #mother_wants_daugher_in her arms sparked outrage among Saudis after the posting of the video by the mother, who demanded that the child be rescued and the aggressor held accountable.
In August 2013, the government brought in legislation making any kind of sexual or physical abuse (Law on the Protection from Abuse) either inside the home or at the workplace punishable. The penalties involve a prison sentence for one year and the payment of a fine of SR5 million. The law also provides full protection for victims of domestic violence.
