In a significant development, the Commission for the Promotion of Virtue and Prevention of Vice (Haia) will be equipped with information technology support in its efforts to curb vice and improve investigation skills in cases related to cyber crimes.

Shaikh Abdul Latif Al Shaikh, president of the commission, has approved the establishment of an IT support section in all its offices, local media has reported. The establishment of an IT section in Haia is part of its strategic plan to develop and improve field work besides tackling emerging issues like cyber crime.

The presence of IT experts in the commission will expedite the investigation process and will also place it in a better position to coordinate with authorities concerned in cyber crime.

It may be mentioned that the incidence of blackmail using modern technology, particularly in the case of girls, has been on the rise, and Haia works closely with other investigating agencies in such cases.

Last year, Haia arrested 215 persons masquerading as magicians and destroyed 426 distilleries. The commission also documented 554 human trafficking and prostitution cases and addressed 700 blackmailing cases.

Haia has organized over 14,000 training courses for its staff in cooperation with 33 universities. Assistance has also been sought from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to train Haia staff on dealing with diplomats.

Training to the Haia staff is also provided by investigation agencies. It is also considering recruitment of women employees.
