Jeddah has been spruced up this year to receive hundreds of thousands of Haj pilgrims who normally come to the city to relax and do shopping before heading home.

In a recent survey conducted by Arab News, most respondents ranked Jeddah as one of their favorite destinations in the Kingdom.

Several shops have been decked out and are ready to welcome the returning Hajis. Most shop owners are expecting sales to increase by around 20 to 30 percent.

The municipality has adorned several trees with colorful lights, which has brightened up Tahliya and Corniche roads. The addition of the world’s tallest flagpole is also expected to be a major attraction for Hajis this year.

“The city has invested in a range of activities and attractions that will create a super atmosphere and encourage greater numbers of visitor to witness its charm and beauty,” said Mohammed Riyaz, an environmentalist.

A visitor from Dammam, Waheed Ghosaibi, said: “Jeddah has always been a good city in the Kingdom to spend Eid holidays. The launch of the world’s tallest flag has enhanced the city, which invites people to soak up the spirit of Eid celebrations with loved ones.”

The Royal Commission for Yanbu and Jubail has been holding special Eid Al-Adha celebrations with traditional dances, music, lectures and activities for children over the past few days. Ahmed Al-Umari, media coordinator for the commission, told Arab News that the festivities were being held at three locations on Yanbu beach. There are sections for families, men and women.

He said Alaa bin Abdullah Nassif, the chief executive officer of the commission, wants to provide a suitable environment for families to enjoy their Eid.
