JEDDAH: A Saudi woman in the border region of Jzan was killed in a shelling barrage by Houthi militias from Yemen on Sunday, the Directorate for Civil Defense said.

Major Yahya Al-Qahtani, Civil Defense spokesman in Jazan, said two other members of the woman’s family were wounded when a shell struck their house at 2 a.m. Sunday.

A number of people in the Kingdom’s border regions, some of them children, have been killed in the past days by sustained Houthi shelling and rocket attacks since since the suspension in early August of UN-brokered peace talks with Yemen’s government.

Retaliatory air strikes by the Saudi-led military coalition has also destroyed Houthi positions in the Yemeni capital, Sanaa.

On Wednesday, a Saudi border guard was killed after shelling from Yemen hit a frontier post in Jazan.

And a week ago, similar attacks killed three children in Saudi Arabia and wounded nine other people.

Cross-border fire from Yemen has killed about 100 civilians and members of the security forces on the Saudi side since the war began.

In Yemen itself, more than 6,600 people, mostly civilians, have been killed since March 2015, according to the UN.
