JEDDAH: A Saudi security officer was killed in the Jazan region in an exchange of fire with Houthi militants across the border with Saudi Arabia as an advanced border post came under heavy fire.
Interior Ministry Spokesman Maj. Gen. Mansour Al-Turki said the post was targeted by the Houthi militias from Yemen, to which the Saudi forces responded in kind, bringing the situation under control with the support of ground troops.
However, Cpl. Muhammad Musa Hassan Mahzari of the Border Guards lost his life in action.
Meanwhile, security officers in the eastern region launched a manhunt for unknown gunmen who opened fire on the personnel demolishing houses in Al-Masora neighborhood in Awamiyah, Qatif region of the Eastern Province, which damaged a heavy peace of equipment but caused no injuries.
The police said a bulldozer was burnt when it came under fire.
Col. Ziad Al-Roqaiti, spokesman for the police, said: “At 8 a.m. on Thursday, police from Qatif received a report that a bulldozer belonging to a contracting company came under fire in Al-Masora neighborhood, Awamiyah, and was burnt, but no workers or passersby were injured.”
Al-Roqaiti said that the Civil Defense put out the fire and the police launched an investigation into the attack.
Houses in Al-Masora neighborhood are being demolished as part of a development project that covers about 400 residential units of varying sizes in a neighborhood that extends over more than 120,000 square meters.
The buildings, dating back to over 100 years, were being demolished following a compensation agreement with the landlords and all legal procedures.
