Noted humorous poet, with an atypical name, Typical Jagtyali, stole the show during a mushaira, an Urdu poetry gathering, at a beach camp in Jubail recently.

Organized by Hyderabad Deccan Connections, a socio-cultural organization based in Jubail, the “Shaam-e-Mizah,” or an evening filled with humorous Urdu poetry (mushaira), drew many Urdu lovers from the Subcontinent, besides many guest poets from India.

Shiraz Mahdi Zia was quite lively while conducting the two-hour session.

The mushaira kept up to its title, ‘Sham-e-Mizah’ and having had the audience in splits of laughter, winning appreciation from the audience, because the Urdu poetry was drenched in the unique Deccani accent and slang.

Typical Jagtyali recited several poems in a light-hearted manner but the verses were laden with subtle messages on contemporary social and cultural issues and the bitter realities of daily life.

Hyderabad Deccan Connections is known for its community initiatives under its founder president Syed Waheed Lateef.

Lateef praised the team for successfully holding the event mainly the event manager Araj Khan and team members Mohammed Abdul Sattar, Mohammed Abdulrasheed, Mohammed Abdulnaseer, Aneesuddin, Hashmat Khan, Ibrahim Khan (Azam), Mohammed Abdul Haleem, Ateequrrahman, Mirza Ansar, Amjad Ali, and Ayaz Mohammed.

Tahir Mohiuddin, chairman of the Indian International School-Jubail, and members of the managing committee — Ateequrrahman, Naseeruddin Ansari, Naseem Ahmed and Mastan Zakir — were also present at the event.

The session started with a brief lecture on the “misconceptions about Muharram” by Manzoor Khan. Other participants included writer Nayeem Javed and poet Mujeeb Hyderabadi. Javed’s verses on native Deccan fruits brought back sweet memories for many in the audience.
